Long-distance relationships can be tough; that’s a fact. That time apart makes you miss your man. You might wonder if it’s worth it and in your darkest moments. Perhaps you consider finding someone else. After all, he’ll never find out. Or you wonder if he’s acting on those same thoughts. At the Bad Girls Bible, we have no doubt that your long-distance relationship can work – if you can make it through the hard parts. That’s why we’ve posted advice about LDRs (here and here).
But sometimes you just need to know you’re not alone, that others have been through it. Plenty of people have been in your shoes, and many of them have written songs about it. Listening to long distance relationship songs can help you feel better or even let you cry it out if you need. And if you and your man listen to the same long distance relationship song, you can feel more connected.
If you’re stumped as to which long distance relationship songs to add to your playlist, read on!
1. I’M GONNA BE (500 MILES) – THE PROCLAIMERS
Is there any long distance relationship song better known than this one? It’s been an LDR anthem since it was released in 1988. The band croons about how they would walk 500 miles to get back to their lovers. The song manages to take a hardship and make it sound uplifting.
2. LEAVIN’ ON A JET PLANE
“Leavin’ on a Jet Plane” is another one of those songs that immediately springs to mind when it comes to long distance relationships. But you won’t necessarily think of the same version as the next person. John Denver is the song writer and original performer, but Chantal Kreviazuk did the version above, which was featured in the movie Armageddon in 1999. Peter, Paul and Mary have also performed the song, which talks about how hard it is to leave your lover, even when you know you’ll see each other again.
3. DIRTY MIND – HALESTORM
This long distance relationship song is more recent, heavier and dirtier than many of the others on this list. Instead of singing about how hard it is to be in an LDR, Lzzy Hale sings about one of the unexpexted perks: phone sex. Check out the lyrics below.
I don’t need to have you here
To feel you crashing into me
I’m better off this way, yeah
Not hearing me complain
And I don’t need to taste your lips
I’ve satisfied my appetite
Me and my dirty mind
Been working overtime
If you’re wondering why phone sex is so hot and how to get the most out of it, read this post. Or continue on for some more traditional long distance relationship songs.
4. FAITHFULLY – JOURNEY
The guys in Journey always seemed to know how we were feeling, and “Faithfully” is no exception! This song comes from the point of view of a touring band member, but you can easily imagine that it’s you – or your man – traveling miles and sleeping alone at night. But “Faithfully” reassures us that distance doesn’t have to break a relationship if you’re both committed.
5. MANY THE MILES – SARA BAREILLES
Sara’s piano-driven, jazz-inspired pop music might just make you feel better when your LDR has got you down. “Many the Miles” asks the simple question of how many miles we must travel to get back to the person whom we love, even if that isn’t what we were looking for in the beginning. Wondering whether a long-distance relationship is doable prevents some people from getting into one, but taking that risk can pay off in the end.
6. WHEN YOU’RE GONE – AVRIL LAVIGNE
Avril might have made it big with her upbeat pop songs, but “When You’re Gone” takes it down a notch. This ballad talks about how hard it is to be separated from the person we love. It feels like your heart is breaking. Everything reminds you of that person. The things you used to enjoy lose their meaning or become painful because you did those things together. And maybe you need to listen to a song like this and allow yourself to be sad before you get back to your life.
7. AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH – MARVIN GAYE AND TAMMI TERRELL
When you’re ready to pick up the beat, here’s a song that will have your toes tapping as you sing along. It’s uplifting and thanks to “Guardians of the Galaxy,” has seen renewed popularity! It’s a simply ditty about how no mountain can be high enough, no valley can be low enough and no inclement weather can stop you from getting to your lover. If your man is feeling doubt about your LDR, perhaps sending him the song or lyrics could help him feel better.
8. A THOUSAND MILES – VANESSA CARLTON
Here’s a song to send to your man to let him know that you’re thinking of him and you’d do anything in your power to close the distance between you. It’s nice to about these over-the-top analogies to describe your situation, even if you literally can’t walk 1,000 miles to see your man!
9. HEY THERE DELILAH – PLAIN WHITE TS
We go from piano to guitar in this alt-pop song by Plain White T’s. A singer pours our his heart to the woman whom he loves in the video. She’s in NYC, and he’s “1,000 miles away” according to the lyrics, but he’s still enthralled by her. Bonus points if you actually learn to play this song on guitar and sing it for your man over Skype!
10. I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU – STEVIE WONDER
Stevie Wonder sang about how distance breaks your heart, especially over the holidays, in 1984. The song struck a chord with a number of people, rising to number 1 on over a dozen international music charts, earning three Grammy nominations and winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
11. RIGHT HERE WAITING – RICHARD MARX
What are you to do when your man has to travel for work? If you’re like Richard Marx, then you’ll probably sing this song while you await your beloved’s return while she films a movie in Africa. Marx was no stranger to the long distance relationship, connecting with his partner only through phone calls, so he put his feelings down on paper. This piano ballad might be too mushy to listen to at any other time (unless you’re a hopeless romantic!), but the lyrics make it one of the perfect songs about long distance relationships.
12. UNCHAINED MELODY – THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS
Few songs manage to be as haunting and beautiful as “Unchained Melody,” which you might remember from the soundtrack of the movie Ghost. The Righteous Brothers have got that lonesome wail down! Although, you might prefer versions by Elvis or the 600+ other artists who have covered this song, which we’re pretty sure is the definitive long distance relationship song!
Of course, not all of these are songs about long distance relationships. But when you turn on the radio or your iPod and hear songs about missing someone, it’s easy to draw parallels to your current situation. While you might not be able to see your man, you can listen to these long distance relationship songs and even create a playlist or mix CD to let him know how you feel. It’ll make a sweet gift while you’re apart!
